After the Eagles split up (for the first time), guitarist-singer Glenn Frey cut a predictably slick solo debut in his old band's party-boy mode; No Fun Aloud is like a Joe Walsh album with (slightly) better singing. Not songs, though; apparently that was Don Henley's department. The Allnighter glistens with synthesized oomph, but the sugar coating doesn't sit well on Frey's mannered white R&B loverman act. "Smuggler's Blues," the set piece for the follow up, was utilized in an episode of the television show Miami Vice (Frey had a small role), jump-starting The Allnighter on the charts. "Smuggler's Blues," the catchiest tune on the album by far, was a lot more interesting to watch -- like a dramatized video clip -- than it is to listen to, however. By Soul Searchin', Frey sounded like he wasn't even trying anymore; his pump-your-body TV gym commercials at the time displayed more sweat and effort. With Strange Weather, Frey seemed determined to make a statement. "Love in the 21st Century" was a catchy but disposable rocker in the vein of his Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack hit "The Heat Is On," but both "I've Got Mine" and "He Took Advantage (Blues for Ronald Reagan)" found him stumbling around in the same rich-rock-star-as-self-righteous-angry-l iberal footsteps as Henley; suffice it to say, neither song came within spitting distance of the dignified grace of Henley's The End of the Innocence. Frey fares much better with the album-closing "Part of Me, Part of You" -- a feel-good, top-down anthem in the spirit of his easy-rolling Eagles hits "Take It Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling." Of course, that song was first featured in the film Thelma & Louise, conclusive proof that as a solo artist, Frey's forte is hooky soundtrack fodder and lousy albums. As such, he's best represented by either of his two best-of collections, both of which offer "Part of Me," "The Heat Is On," "Smuggler's Blues," and his other Miami Vice hit, "You Belong to the City." Collecting Autographs for Fun and, Sometimes, Profit

I began collecting fine art prints 35 years ago. I made a few mistakes along the way. I trusted too many unscrupulous dealers and bought some fakes. But I soon learned that it's a business and they are all out to make money, at our expense. Therefore, I began to research the signatures and type of work they produced. After a while, I was able to spot the real from fraudulent in a few seconds. In other words, I became my own best expert.

A word of warning; EBay has bunches of fakes so start somewhere else and try to stay with a UACC member of the Universal Autograph Collectors Club. They have some basic standards and offer some hope of an honest deal. The trick is to find a reputable dealer that gives a money-back guarantee and a COA or Certificate or Letter of Authenticity that should also state they stand behind the signature.
But if you are seeking Neil Armstrong, Elvis Presley, John Lennon or even Marilyn Monroe's autograph and have a few 1000 to spend on each, beware. There are zillions of fakes out there. Compare it to counterfeiting one-dollar bills. You hardly find any. But there are plenty of fake hundreds and that's where the profit is. So forgers go after the high-ticket items and that is where you have to really do your homework. Presley, Monroe, and John Lennon died young and have limited signatures out there. Armstrong stopped signing in 1995. There are a few Monroe signed checks produced after she married Joe Dimaggio and they state, "Marilyn DiMaggio" as her signature. Yet her married name was Norma Jean DiMaggio, as written on her marriage license and USO entertainment card. So a check signed Marilyn DiMaggio is an obvious fake. You can also look at Lennon's signature as it changed with the years and Presley signed very few albums. So, you must do your own background work before writing that big check yourself.
Finally, autograph collecting can be fun and fascinating. Only spend what you can afford and if you find that incredible deal, like a hand-signed photo of the Beatles or Apollo 11 astronauts for $199, you can be sure it's a fake. Period. No legitimate dealer who knows the value will dump a real signature for much less than it's worth. I did buy a few fakes in the beginning because I was greedy and thought I was saving money, Luckily, it only cost me a few hundred bucks but I am older and wiser for it. You can get a quick opinion from a few services like PSA and AMAA for $10 or so and it's worth it before the purchase. PSA offers it for any Ebay item. So, choose your hero, check out their autograph and get familiar with it first. Compare prices and if it looks suspicious, wait for the real one to come along; it always will. I enjoy making rebatched/hand milled soap. This soap making method uses ready made soap as the base. You usually grate it, melt it, then mix in your additives, pour it into the mold and wait for it to set.

When you're ready, take a deep breath -- inhaling slowly through your nose deeply into your abdomen -- completely filling your lungs.

What a hobby! Metal detecting is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the world. Why? It is the only hobby you get paid to do, if you learn the proper operation of your metal detector, where to hunt for "treasure" and avoid common mistakes. You can make money, build some great coin collections, get healthy exercise, relax and experience some wonderful excitement too.
For metal detecting to be rewarding it is essential that you have a basic understanding of how a metal detector operates. All metal detectors have an invisible field around the coil or loop as it is sometimes called. When this field comes in contact with metal either underneath it in the ground (or in the water) or sometimes above it in the air, the detector gives a signal. This is a simple description of how a hand held metal detector works.

Ther are simple to use but limited in their depth capabilities. The single most important element to metal detecting success is knowledge. Let us examine the basic features of metal detectors that will increase the success potential.
All metal detectors have a loop or coil. Each coil type has its own special characteristics. The two most common types are the concentric and the double "D". Both of these are wide scan coils. This means that nearly the whole loop area will receive signals from metal objects that are not buried deep. This is easily seen by putting a penny or dime on top of the ground that is clear of other metal and move the coil back and forth over it at just and inch or two above the ground. Neraly every area of the coil will elicit a signal from the coin. Now raise the coil to about four or five inches above the coin and do the same movements again. This time not all areas of the coil will obtain a signal. The higher you raise the coil above the coin the smaller the area of the coil receives a signal. The field that is emitted from these standards coils is in essence cone shaped. The deeper a coin or other metal object is buried the greater the need to overlap the coil sweep.
Most metal detectors come with a standard coil size of 8-10 inches. For most coin and jewelry hunting this is best. If an area has a lot of trash or junk metals a smaller 4-6 inch loop could increase the number of good finds. The larger the loop the greater the depth capabilities but 12-16 coils will also be less sensitive to smaller size targets and are harder to pinpoint. The smaller coils will not go as deep but can find the smaller nugget size items and are much easier to First Class Stamp targets. Two other shaped coils are also becoming popular. The elliptical coils have similar depth levels of the round ones but give greater search area. The "Big Foot" coil is becoming very popular with competition hunters is also called the "figure eight" loop. This coil is very Stamp Collecting Storage for fast searching at deeper levels. The search area of this narrow 18 inch rectangular coil is nearly the entire coil with very little cone effect. It is very important that you understand your detector's coil features. The easiest way to do this is to do an air test with a coin. Keeping the coil in a horizontal position, turn the detector on and adjust it for coin hunting. Take a penny or dime and move it back and forth in all directions and various depth levels determining the cone effect, the coil effects at shallow distances, sensitivity around the coil edges and how to adjust your detector for its best depth. Turning the coin on its edge and doing the same movements will also help with understanding the signals from coins turned on edge in the ground.
As I mentioned earlier, the single most important key to success with a metal detector is knowledge. The first source of information is your owner's manual. Read your operator's manual through several times. After reading it go practice using your detector. Repeat this process until you understand all of the characteristics of your machine.
Another great help with your metal detector is field tests found in treasure magazines or online. Experienced users making a field test on the same model detector that you own can add to your knowledge. Metal detector forums online also provide informative comments on detector use.
